Her father, a member of ISIS, forced her mother, a Yazidi woman from Sinjar, Iraq, to marry him. The girl and her mother were captured when the last stronghold of the caliphate fell in Baghuz in 2019. Her father is believed to have been killed during the battle. Mistakenly accused of belonging to the terrorist organisation, they spent five years in Al Hol camp, hiding their true Yazidi identity fearing reprisal from other prisoners. They were finally released in 2024.
